Book Notes: February Reads

Summer HouseSummer House by Nancy Thayer
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a well-written novel about a wealthy family that has a family home on Nantucket. Matriarch Nona still reigns the estate and has a symbolic reign over the family business of a Boston bank that has been in the family for generations. Nona (90) naps often, but is well loved, and respected. The story centers at the vacation home; the comings and goings, and the relationships between the generations. It is an honest yet loving portrait of family love, secrets, jealousy, greed, forgiveness but the overall message is acceptance.

This book has a lot of similarities to Gone Girl, only this one is so much better! It has all of the suspense, with a more involved plot and characters. A young and beautiful TV star disappears and she was presumed murdered by her husband (Daniel Hayes) who can not be located. Daniel narrates through his alcohol and drug induced stretched which are clouded by profound amnesia. He feels things are familiar but he can not place them. As the story progresses, Daniel gradually gains bits of clarity and he figures out what lead up to the whole complicated mess of bribery, man hunt, threats, murders, and deceit. A few times I read over passages and still wasn't exactly sure what happened, but overall, a great read that would make a fabulous movie.
