Book Notes: The Five Love Languages

The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your MateThe Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate by Gary Chapman

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is so powerful! The premise is that we all speak essentially a different "language" of love, and it is essential that you learn your own language and that of your spouse to best keep each other happy. The five types are: physical touch, act of service, quality time, receiving gifts, and words of affirmation. Dr. Chapman illustrates the five languages with examples of couples he has counseled, and then ideas for you to use if that type is your spouse's, "dominant love language." Dr. Chapman narrates the audiobook, and he is a jovial North Carolinian who make regular references to God. Reading his biography, he is heavily involved with the church but this book is not preachy.
Even more valuable to me, was a free online quiz I found to help determine your love language. There is a version for Husbands, Wives, Parent's of Teens, and several other options. It takes about 5 minutes, and was terribly insightful, especially when you hand the results over to your spouse explaining the concepts and terms. Everyone in a relationship should read this, (or at least take the quiz) and have your partner do the same.
