Book Notes: The Christmas Train

The Christmas TrainThe Christmas Train by David Baldacci

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

This story was easy and harmless. I thought the writing was pretty cheesy and the main character, Tom Langdon was obnoxious. Some may find the plot charming and think of a Hallmark Channel movie. The story follows Tom on a cross-country train from DC to LA via Chicago. Tom’s on the train for four reasons; one, to get to LA to meet up with his “girlfriend,” two, to write about the cross country trip—he is a journalist after all, three, he was not allowed to fly for two years because of an altercation with a TSA agent and finally four, because he’s doing some sole searching after years of unmatched love. OF COURSE Tom runs into his “one and only” on the train, and of course, his current girlfriend surprises him and is there too. I’ll stop there with the spoilers, but rolls along quite predictably until the end. The highlight of the book for me was the colorful, lively, bubbly train attendant, Roxanne, who brightened and comforted on a constant basis. Despite its name, the book was not steeped in Christmas, so if you like Hallmark or Lifetime movies, you could give this one a try anytime of year. You may just want to take a train ride after you finish and see what adventures and characters unfold.
